Skin tone and undertone analysis

Most people use "undertone" and "skin color" to mean the same thing. They are different.

Skin color is what you see in the mirror: fair, olive, tan, deep. It changes with the sun. Undertone sits a layer beneath, and it barely changes at all. Two people with equally fair skin can have opposite undertones and suit completely different colors.

So "fair skin looks good in anything" does not hold up.

Warm, cool or neutral

Warm undertones lean yellow, golden or peach. Cool undertones lean pink, red-violet or blue. Neutral sits in between and can wear both sides if the depth and brightness are right.

The color on the surface is a poor guide. Someone whose skin looks yellow can turn out cool, and someone who looks pink can turn out warm. Khwan's view: you only know for sure once fabric is draped against your face.

Four checks you can try at home

Do them in daylight near a window, out of direct sun, with no foundation on.

  1. Look at the veins on your inner wrist. Green usually points warm, blue or purple points cool, a mix may mean neutral.
  2. Hold a gold chain and then a silver one near your face. Whichever makes your skin look healthier is the hint.
  3. Hold pure white paper or fabric under your chin, then an off-white or cream one. Pure white winning suggests cool. Cream winning suggests warm.
  4. Think about how you react to sun. Tanning easily to a golden brown points warm. Going red and burning first points cool.

If three of the four agree, that is a reasonable starting point.

Why the result is often unclear

Light fools you. Warm shop lights, cool white bulbs at home and afternoon sun all shift how a color reads, and your eyes adjust without telling you.

You also know your own face too well. When a shirt dulls you a little, it registers as "I look tired today", not "this shirt is wrong".

And the home checks only answer warm or cool. Two cool people can still need very different pinks, one soft and pale, one deep and bright. That is why analysis goes on to seasons instead of stopping at temperature.

What draping shows that guessing cannot

Khwan holds real fabric under your chin, one piece at a time, in steady light. If your room is too dark, she brings her own lamp. Then she watches your face, not the fabric:

  • do the shadows under your eyes deepen or flatten
  • do the lines around your mouth sharpen or soften
  • does your skin look flushed or grey
  • does your jaw look defined or flat

Two fabrics side by side make the difference obvious. You see it yourself in the same mirror.

Each person takes about 45-60 minutes. You leave with your own Color Palette and the reasoning behind it, so you can still decide when you meet a color that is not on the chart.

Colors outside your group are still wearable. Keep them away from your face.
